Green Wings 2025: Reforesting Kosovo through Innovation

This autumn marked a new chapter for Green Wings,
Kosovo’s first drone powered reforestation movement.

Green Wings began in 2024 from a simple and urgent truth: Kosovo’s forests were disappearing too quickly and it was time to act.
The idea grew from the #MoseMerrMalin movement, created in 2022 by Sustainability Leadership Kosova together with volunteers who refused to stay silent about the rapid loss of our forests.
*Photos from the Mos e Merr Malin Tour around Kosovo What first began as awareness raising and community outreach soon evolved into a practical model of reforestation shaped by people, science, and shared responsibility.
In 2024, our initial goal was to produce 10,000 seed bombs and plant them across areas identified by GIS analysis as severely degraded.
These included Butovc, Kodra e Trimave and Arbëria. The community response went far beyond what we expected. Instead of 10,000 seed bombs, volunteers created 14,250, allowing us to plant 6 hectares of land around Prishtina. That success raised our ambitions for 2025.
If the community could exceed expectations once, why not aim higher?
This year, we doubled our ambition. We set out to create 25,000 seed bombs and restore 10 hectares of land near the Municipality of Prishtina, focusing on the hills of Mramor. Building on research and field analysis conducted since 2021, and guided by GIS based assessments, we mapped the terrain to identify the areas most in need of reforestation, ensuring that every action was thoughtful, targeted, and science informed.

Seed Bomb Making Workshops
From 15 September to 24 October 2025, Green Wings opened its doors to the public once again. Over these five weeks, more than 350 volunteers joined the workshops and worked together to create 25,667 seed bombs.
But numbers alone cannot describe what happened inside those workshops.
Every day brought in new faces. Students, professors, school groups, activists, environmental enthusiasts, journalists, professionals, women’s groups, institutions, representatives from the Kosovo Police and the Kosovo Security Force, and citizens who simply wanted to do something good for nature.
Each seed bomb made carries something bigger than its size. It carries intention, care and the belief that small actions can build real forests.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team ensured the smooth running of every workshop and planting session
Malësorja takes flight!
This year Green Wings reached a long awaited milestone. Our very own reforestation drone arrived.
We named her Malësorja.

With the long standing support of Raiffeisen Bank Kosova, Malësorja became the heart of the planting stage. She now carries and disperses the seed bombs across 10 hectares of degraded terrain around Prishtina, reaching areas that are difficult or impossible to access on foot.
The Municipality of Prishtina and Mayor Përparim Rama supported this vision from the beginning, ensuring that Green Wings could operate, grow and bring innovation to the city’s natural landscapes.
What’s Next for Green Wings in 2026
As Green Wings moves into 2026, the focus remains on scaling reforestation while staying grounded in science and community action.
Building on the progress of 2024 and 2025, Green Wings plans to expand reforestation efforts within the Municipality of Prishtina, aiming to restore up to 20 additional hectares of degraded land. These areas will continue to be selected through GIS-based analysis and drone mapping, drawing on deforestation research that SLK has been conducting since 2021.
Community involvement will remain at the core of the initiative. In 2026, Green Wings aims to engage 300 to 400 volunteers and produce up to 50,000 seed bombs, using native seeds to support long-term ecosystem recovery. Planting and monitoring activities will be supported by seasonal drone flights, allowing the team to track progress and adapt restoration strategies over time.
Green Wings continues to grow with intention, combining data, technology, and collective action to restore land and strengthen community stewardship. The work ahead is ambitious, but the direction is clear and we are just getting started.
