THE CRISIS
Our mountains are going silent.
Between 2000 and 2022, Kosovo lost 15,980 hectares of forest, equivalent to between 2 and 3.5 hectares disappearing every single day. Illegal logging, firewood dependency, agricultural expansion, and weak enforcement stripped our hillsides bare.
Now, new research shows the crisis has entered a more dangerous phase. In just three years between 2022 and 2025 - 35,259 hectares were affected by fire, of which approximately 17,176 hectares were active forest before the flames arrived. Nearly half of all burned land was forest.
The years 2024 and 2025 alone accounted for more than 84% of all fire damage in that period, making them the most destructive on record.
The regions of Prishtina and Mitrovica bore the heaviest impact, together accounting for more than half of all burned areas nationally. Fire is no longer an isolated or seasonal event it is a systemic threat, shaped by prolonged drought, rising temperatures, and the cumulative pressure of decades of forest loss.
The air our children breathe, the water our villages drink, the landscapes we call home all of it depends on forests we are losing right now.
But this is not a story about despair. It's about what happens when people decide to act.
35,000
Hectares affected by fire
That's 1.5 hectares per day — equivalent to 3.5 football fields vanishing every 24 hours. By 2025, fires alone have devastated a further 17,176 hectares of Kosovo's forests.
(Verified by satellite imagery from ESA Sentinel 2 and NASA Landsat 8.)

IS THIS YOU?
Two Ways to Join the Movement
IN KOSOVO
You want to act, not just talk.
You don't want to just share a post. You want to show up, make something with your hands, stand for solutions, and have something real to point to.
Green Wings is where that happens. One day. Seed bombs. A drone launch. 900+ people your age. Photos your friends will actually engage with. And a line on your CV that says you did something.
FROM ABROAD
You want to build something back home.
You follow the news. You see the fires, the forest loss, the environmental decline. And despite the distance, you feel the responsibility to do something meaningful, not just symbolic.
You want your contribution to be traceable, transparent, and real. Not lost in overhead, but visible on the ground.
Every euro you give maps to a specific output: seed bombs created, hectares restored, satellite-verified.

COMMON QUESTIONS
You Might Be Wondering
"I don't have time for weekly meetings."
Green Wings events are one-day, seasonal. No meetings, no committees. Show up when you can, bring a friend.
"How do I know my donation won't be wasted?"
Satellite-verified data. Open-source GIS analysis on GitHub. Quarterly impact reports.
"I'm abroad — how can I contribute from here?"
Our entire diaspora path is designed for remote participation. Track your impact via satellite imagery, and visit your trees when you're home for summer.
"I'm not an environmentalist."
Neither were most of our 913+ volunteers. This isn't about being green — it's about whether Kosovo will have forests when you're 40. It's about clean air for your kids. It's about not losing our mountains.
"Will it actually make a difference?"
16 hectares restored. 39,917 seed bombs deployed. A drone that plants 5x faster than humans. This isn't symbolic — it's measurable. And we're just getting started.
